1st Recipe

So I got this menu from a lady at church. It is a 3 month meal menu. You should be able to store these foods on your pantry shelf and if you have them all you can feed your family breakfast and dinner for 3 months. All this can be accomplished without running water, and over your camp stove if there is no power.

So for the first recipe I tried.
Sweet and Sour Chicken
1 can chicken
1 can pineapple tidbits
1/3 C vinegar
1/2 C sugar
2 T cornstarch
2 T soy sauce
1/2 T molasses
1/2 T dried onion
1 1/2 C rice
3 C water
salt

Since we aren't in an emergency, and my thrift is always on the look out, we used 1 leftover chicken breast instead of a can. It turned out great and it made enough that we could have nicely fed 6 people. When I tried to figure out how much it cost in total, I figured it couldn't have cost more than $4. That's right! 6 people fed for less than $4, and it was fast and easy. In the economy we are trying to make it through in it makes sense for that emergency too.

I'll keep trying this menu out and posting the results. In the end I'll give you the breakdown, but I am projecting that to get the whole 3 month pantry you would spend under $500. It will be 15 dinners served 6 times and 7 breakfasts served 13 times. I am trying to feed a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids under 6).
